MSC.402(96) inspection intervals require annual checks and a five-year thorough examination for lifeboats, davits, winches and release gear under SOLAS III/20.
Annual confirms safe operation onboard and produces a class-ready evidence pack for PSC/class checks during port calls.
Five-year adds deeper examination, NDT where required, and 110% SWL proof-load with class/flag witnessing when applicable.
This prevents off-hire escalation and avoids “redo paperwork” at survey.
Baltic ports note: Klaipėda, Riga, Tallinn and Gdańsk/Gdynia are typical mobilization windows (Baltics/Nordics/North Sea).
Annual scope (typical):
- Falls/wire condition, reeving and lubrication; sheaves alignment and wear.
- Winch function, brake holding, limit switches and controls.
- Davit structure/foundations and securing arrangements.
- Release gear function test and documented reset/lock-back per maker.
- Controlled lowering/recovery and operational readiness confirmation.
Five-year scope (typical):
- Selective dismantling and measurements; NDT where required by class/maker.
- Proof-load: 110% SWL using certified water bags/load cells + documented hold time and results.
- Post-test inspection, restoration of maker settings, and confirmation run at SWL.
Extra inspections apply after major repairs/modifications, overload/incidents, PSC findings, or maker/class restrictions. Therefore, MSC.402(96) inspection intervals should be planned early to book equipment, permits and any witness attendance.
