When is davit proof-load testing required?

Davit proof-load testing is required after installation/major repair and typically on the five-year MSC.402(96) cycle to prove 110% SWL capacity under SOLAS III/20.

It confirms davit structure and brake holding, not just “it moves”.
Why it matters: it prevents PSC delays, rework at survey, and off-hire escalation.
We mobilize with certified water bags/load cells and issue same-day class-ready evidence.

Required (typical triggers):

  • New installation/relocation or commissioning after shipyard work.
  • Major repair/alteration (arm/foundation welds, winch/brake overhaul, sheaves/bearings, falls renewal, gearbox/motor change).
  • After overload/incident or suspected deformation.
  • Five-year thorough examination under MSC.402(96).
  • By class/flag/PSC request or before hand-over/sale.

Test method (110% SWL):

  • 110% SWL proof-load with certified water bags or calibrated deadweights + calibrated load cell.
  • Hold per acceptance criteria, then functional run at SWL (lower/hoist, emergency stop, brake holding).
  • Deliverables: signed load-test sheet, calibration refs, photo log, witness note (if applicable).

Action:
Send ETA/ETD, port/yard details, davit make/model, last certs, scope, gate contact/permits. We pre-book kits and class attendance if required.

Docs:
SOLAS III/20; IMO MSC.402(96). Verify with Class/Flag where applicable.
